RECOMMENDED ZONING CHANGES

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMOVE RESIDENTIAL ZONING FROM DL2400 & RETURN ZONING TO P1

  • To protect the city’s water aquifers that are located by the Nechako River.

  • To protect this urban forest which:

- Shares clean air and health benefits for the city,

- Acts as a fire break for the city,

- Is used for educational/research purposes by UNBC, CNC and SD57 students,

- Is a place of refuge for wildlife which also supports tourism,

- Showcases the full 9K trail system shared with the park that supports our valued mental, social and  physical health,

- Promotes family-friendly access to nature.

  • To create a new much-needed level park access for residents and tourists, and people with disabilities who are unable to access nature outside the city.

BENEFITS TO THE CITY:

  • Protection for city water aquifers that lie by the Nechako River, which is some of the best water in Western Canada

  • Increased happiness and health benefits for the city and tourists.

  • Attracting and retaining

- professional people who will be examining our recreation opportunities and our healthy living options, prior to moving to Prince George;

- and to further enhance retention of graduates from CNC and UNBC.

  • Easy emergency access to the park.

  • Fire protection for the city.

FOR THE FUTURE:  REZONING DL2400 FOR BETTER LONG-TERM BENEFITS.

  • Open up DL2400 for what it was originally intended:  Community use, and outdoor recreational purposes that will serve the city as a place for active living activities, inviting tourism to the city, growing ecotourism and outdoor education.

  • Gather Moore’s Meadow Park, Nechako River Park, Wilson Park and Birdsong Park together into a Prince George River Parks Alliance along the Nechako River, which is renowned for its kayaking and canoeing opportunities.

  • Begin the proposed riverside renewal plan introduced by the city in 2025, to increase our trail systems, to connect our riverside parks and to expand relationships within the city and beyond, such as the Rivershed Society of B.C.
